In October of 2013 I went to Ravenna Italy for the first time. I was inspired by so many things in the cradle of Byzantine mosaic art, but what grabbed me most was work I saw in the museum. There was a permanent installation of mid-20th century paintings along side mosaic interpretations of the paintings. Abstract and representational, all the work spoke to me. I came home wanting to do a project based on this concept. I approached artist friend Rebecca Buchanan to see if she would be interested in collaborating with me. I had always admired her brightly colored paintings, with an unusual technique incorporating yellow tape. I knew her paintings came from a deep personal place, and I would be honored to interpret some in mosaic. She agreed, and we were able to put on an exhibition of the work at Walters Cultural Arts Center in Hillsboro, Oregon. December 2014-January 2015.
