I went on a ceramics excursion to Turkey in 2005 with some North American artists. We took a trip down the Bosphorus, and this piece was inspired by a photo of a warn, algae-growing dock our ferry pulled into. Zooming in with my telephoto lens, I captured a detail that made a stunning abstract landscape. While framing it in the viewfinder, I immediately knew I wanted to make a mosaic of the image. It was a perfect subject for mixed media, and I was able to implement a new clay technique I learned from an artist on that same trip.
This piece was accepted into Mosaic Arts International 2007, a juried show by the Society of American Mosaic Artists. I am additionally honored to have received a Juror's Choice Award for this piece! You can see all the winners from the history of this exhibition on the SAMA website. The exhibition was held at Mesa Contemporary Arts in Mesa, Arizona, March, 2007. Handmade tiles, rusted metal, stone, smalti, wood, handmade felt.
This piece measures 13" x 9.5".
